WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

What is a dental implant

Dental implants in Auckland are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. Depending on your individual needs and the condition of your teeth and gums, several treatment options are available. At Optima Prosthodontics, we pride ourselves on delivering the highest standard of care by collaborating with a team of surgical specialists, such as oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS) and periodontists, to plan and execute the best possible treatment for our patients.

Just so you know, while we handle the prosthetic side of your implant treatment, you will be referred to a surgical specialist for the dental implant placement. This team-based approach ensures that you receive comprehensive, expert care at every stage of your treatment.

A dental implant is a surgical component used to replace a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. It is designed to provide a strong and stable foundation for artificial teeth that are placed on top of it. Dental implants are typically made of biocompatible materials, such as titanium, which allow them to fuse with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration.

As dental implants are surgical components, you need a specialist team of dentists & clinics like Optima Prosthodontics for expert care to restore your smile and oral health. We offer comprehensive dental implant solutions, including All on Four and full mouth implants in Auckland and Hamilton.

What is the procedure

The dental implant procedure involves several steps. First, a small hole is drilled into the jawbone where the missing tooth used to be. Then, the dental implant is placed into the hole and the gum is stitched back into place. Over the next few months, the implant undergoes osseointegration, during which it fuses with the surrounding jawbone.

Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, a connector called an abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment serves as a support structure for the artificial tooth or crown. Finally, a custom-made artificial tooth is placed onto the abutment to complete the restoration.

Here are some of the most common dental implant treatment options:

  • Single tooth implant: If you are missing a single tooth, a single implant can replace it. You don’t need a removable partial denture or bridge to replace the missing tooth.

  • Multiple teeth implants: If you are missing multiple teeth, multiple teeth implants can be used to replace them. This involves placing two or more dental implants into the jawbone and attaching a bridge to them.

  • All-on-4 or All-on-X: If you are missing all or most of your teeth, an All-on-4 or All-on-X dental implant procedure can be used to replace them. This involves placing four or six dental implants strategically in the jawbone and attaching a full arch-fixed bridge to them.

  • Implant-supported dentures: If you are missing all or most of your teeth but have insufficient bone density to support several dental implants for a full arch-fixed bridge, implant-supported dentures can replace them. This involves placing two or more dental implants into the jawbone and attaching a removable denture to them. This option is an ideal remedy for the elderly or when budgets are restricted to simpler but effective options.

What are the benefits

Auckland dental implants offer several advantages over traditional tooth replacement options, such as bridges or dentures. They provide a more natural look and feel, as they are anchored directly into the jawbone like natural teeth. Dental implants are also durable and long-lasting, with proper care and maintenance. They can help improve speech, chewing ability, and overall oral health.

It's important to note that dental implant procedures require a healthy jawbone and good oral health. The process typically involves a consultation with a dentist specialist who will evaluate your case and determine if dental implants suit you.
