Two Day TMD Course

  • NZDA House 195 Main Highway Auckland, Auckland, 1051 New Zealand (map)

Unfortunately most dentists do not feel prepared or confident in diagnosing or treating patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This 2-Days Comprehensive TMD Course is an in-depth and intensive program designed to equip dental clinicians of all levels with advanced knowledge and practical skills to effectively diagnose and manage TMDs.

TMJ disorders can significantly impact patients' quality of life, leading to various orofacial pain and functional issues. This course aims to empower dentists to address these complex conditions confidently and efficiently within their practices.

Course Objectives:

  • Understanding TMJ Anatomy and Physiology: Participants will delve into the intricate anatomy and function of the TMJ, encompassing its structure, biomechanics, and neural innervation. A strong foundation in these fundamentals will aid in accurate diagnoses and effective treatment planning.

  • Understanding the various aetiologies of TMDs: This will enable dentists to conduct comprehensive assessments, identify contributing factors, and tailor patient-centred treatment plans to address the specific needs of each individual.

  • Understanding Psychosocial factors, sleep, and chronic pain: Participants will gain valuable insights into the significant role that these factors play in the context of TMJ disorders.

  • Diagnosis and Assessment: Dentists will learn comprehensive clinical examination techniques and diagnostic protocols to identify various TMDs, including myofascial pain, internal derangements, and osteoarthritis. Additionally, imaging modalities, such as MRI and CBCT, will be explored to aid in precise diagnoses.

  • Treatment Modalities: This course will provide an extensive overview of conservative treatment approaches. Topics covered include occlusal splints, physical therapy techniques, behavioural strategies, and pharmacological interventions.

  • Occlusion and Bite Management: Understanding the relationship between occlusion, bruxism and TMJ health is vital for dentists. Participants will explore occlusal principles and their impact on TMJ function, ensuring they can appropriately manage occlusal issues that contribute to TMJ disorders.

  • Advanced Intervention Techniques: Dentists will be introduced to advanced treatment options for complex cases, such as arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, and joint injections. Although surgical approaches will not be taught in-depth, an awareness of these techniques will help dentists make informed referrals when necessary.

  • Interdisciplinary Management: Collaboration with other healthcare professionals is often essential in treating TMJ disorders. Dentists will learn how to effectively communicate and work with specialists like oral surgeons, physical therapists, and pain management specialists to deliver comprehensive care.

  • Case Studies: A wide range of real-world case studies will be presented to illustrate the diagnosis and management of different TMDs.

  • And much more!
